"A self-proclaimed under-dog, Monica Rush is ready to raise her middle finger to anyone that stands in her way moving forward. Known for her buzz single "100 Dolla Bill" that made its way into the downtown NYC scene early 2010, Monica Rush is no newbie to the music industry. Taken under the wing of grammy-award winning producer Cory Rooney (Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, Jessica Simpson, etc) early on, Monica gained a strong foundation in production, evident in her works. Always faithful, Monica's unique sound has been craft over the past 6 years with production partner Kobayashi and vocal producer McJosh. She describes her sound as a mash-up of electronic, funk, the color grey, and a dollop of multiple personality disorder. Dandy Wellington and The Made To Measure Band

Last Wednesday I had the pleasure of seeing this delightfully spirited gang at Sugar Bar. The Made to Measure Band whisks us away to a more simple; a tad more divine. Drawing from a variety of broadway and jazz standards, we are transported into the past to the tune of love. With a wink of an eye and a tip of his hat, Dandy Wellington gives us New York at its best; ripe with class and chance encounters.

The band strikes up a playful melody, turning up the dial on our imaginations. As our troubles melt away, in walks our Dandy to complete the scene. His first words, “It always feels like Sunday in New York,” say it all. We sigh. Our minds fill with thoughts of strolling in Central Park, taking in a Matinee, or flipping through the Sunday Style Section over coffee. Warmed by the amber glow and the tender tone of Mr. Wellington’s leisurely patter, we forget our daily grind and let it all go.

In a world which rewards inner turmoil as ‘high art’, I applaud Dandy Wellington and The Made To Measure Band for their youthful elegance. They play for an idyllic world of sunny days, big smiles, and romantic rendezvous. After all, who hasn’t fallen in love. Who hasn’t wished upon a night star. And doesn’t everyone want to be devastatingly dapper?

Thanks to Dandy Wellington, we remember how just how sweet simple can be.

The “Ins and Outs” of Etiquette: Elevators and Taxicabs

“Politeness and consideration for others is like investing pennies and getting dollars back.” –Thomas Sowell

I truly believe that people today aren’t ruder than they used to be, but that they are more distracted, busy, and too focused on their own insular world to put others before themselves.

By writing this column, I’m hoping to draw attention to the kinds of actions and gestures that we ignore or take for granted during the all the twitter and clatter of life. But – as much as I love Emily Post’s Age of Innocence approach to manners, I plan to talk about etiquette in a more practical way. For example, one thing I like to say to strangers when they are impolite and do things like not say “thank you” when I’ve held the door open for them, is “Newsflash! Other people exist!” a line, which I stole from a scene in the now defunct HBO show Six Feet Under. It may sound shocking and not very polite for me to say to people, but I have yet to receive a retort that matches it (most people say nothing) because they know, deep down, that they are not putting others first and are being rude. If Emily Post heard me say that to a stranger, she would probably blow a gold gilded gasket. Then again, things have changed a tad since she first doled out her advice.

Being polite does not mean you’re weak, or that you have to swallow all your feelings, and it certainly never means having to be a doormat. Following etiquette is simply about putting your best self forward and about encouraging others (hopefully through your example) to do the same.

That being said, and without further ado, let’s review some common “ins and outs” of etiquette regarding two integral parts of city living – entering and exiting elevators and taxicabs.

Elevators

Picture this (hopefully familiar) scenario: the full elevator you’re in has just descended to the lobby and the doors open. People begin to leave the elevator in a hurry, but one kind gentleman in the elevator waits while all the women exit first, saying, “After you” or “Please” with his arm extended, allowing the ladies to go ahead of him.

Some people, even women, might find this chivalrous act of elevator etiquette outmoded or old fashioned, but it really is a charming gesture and something that all men, young and old alike, should commit to habit.

- Men should allow all ladies to exit first before exiting themselves (if you aren’t sure whether she is, in fact, a “she,” allow them to exit first anyway – like I say, “When in doubt, let ‘em out”).

- After the ladies have disembarked, the men exit according to who is closest to the doors.

- Women, upon being extended the courtesy of exiting first, please look at the man and say “thank you!”

I cannot tell you how many times I see this fine, endangered gesture go unacknowledged by women. Ladies, if you don’t reaffirm chivalry with appreciation, it will altogether disappear. No one likes to feel invisible and men definitely don’t want to extend their kindness only to be ignored by some crotchety, grumpy sour puss (which applies to young and older ladies alike).

- Those waiting to board the elevator should stand either to either side of the doors or far enough away from the open doors to allow others to exit. No one should have to dodge or circumvent his or her way around you to get off an elevator.

Hint: if you’ve ever heard someone say a grouchy-sounding “excuse me” to you when they’re exiting and you’re waiting to board an elevator, you’re probably hovering too close.

- Similarly, the last person to exit an elevator should put his or her hand or arm in the opening of the doors to make sure they don’t close before those waiting to board can embark. It only takes a second and really is the polite thing to do. And if someone does take the effort to hold the doors open for you, please look them in the eye and say “thank you.”
By the way, all of the rules also apply to entering and exiting a subway car.

Taxicabs, Town Cars, and, yes, even Gypsy Cabs

When it comes to entering taxis, town cars, and gypsy cabs, there is always the question of how best to deal with “the slide” (i.e. the common requirement that, due to traffic on the other side of the car, someone must scoot all the way to the far side of the backseat).

- Men, for mercy’s sake, please do not make the woman (or women) you are with do “the slide”. We women hate this. If we are wearing dresses and heels, it is uncomfortable, causes a wrinkled dress, and could cause an embarrassing, Britney-worthy beaver shot (or at least U.S.E., Unintentional Spanx Exposure).

- The correct thing to do here, men, is to open the door to the cab/car and announce, “I’ll slide” before getting in to the cab. The announcement removes the awkwardness of the ladies thinking the man is being selfish for getting in the car first. My husband does this (well, I did have to teach him in the beginning) and it is always such a delight to know that he is thinking of my comfort.

- Another option is to open the car/cab door for the lady and say, “I’ll go around.” This allows the lady to get into the car first, but can only be done safely if the traffic is not too heavy near the far side of the car. Etiquette is important, but should never require surgery.

The B Wood Concept Store First Come First Serve is a 3-Day event in New York City's Greenwich Village. Brian will be collaborating with Brooklyn based boutique Vinnie's Styles, and artist Derrick Adams. Our focus is providing a fun shopping atmosphere for the consumers with a minimalist/clean aesthetic. The First Come First Serve concept will feature limited edition designed t-shirts, lifestyle products, retro re-issues and 1 off handmade pieces.

DAY 1 - Aug 4th: B WOOD X DERRICK ADAMS "FIRST COME FIRST SERVE" Release

Brian Wood collaborates with artist Derrick Adams for the release of "First Come First Serve." Brian and Derrick were inspired to bring awareness on the urgent subject matter of Global warming through a playful melting ice cream design. This T-shirt will be a one-time release and will only be available for sale at the event.

Derrick Adams is a Brooklyn artist who is currently represented by Collette Blanchard Gallery. He has recently had solo exhibitions such as "Go Stand next To the Mountain" at the Kitchen (2010) and "Bizarro Wiz" for NADA Art fame in Miami (2009). He is also the founding director of Rush Arts Gallery, which is a core program of the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation that was started by brothers Russell, Danny and Joseph "Rev. Run" Simmons.

A B Wood produced "Summer Sundae Mix-tape" featuring a host of up-and-coming NYC based artists from various musical genres will be released and given with a purchase of the First Come First Serve" shirt.

DAY 2 - Aug 5th: B WOOD x VINNIE'S

Day 2 fuses B Wood with Brooklyn based boutique Vinnie's Styles, a longtime supporter of Brian's brand for the release of "Welcome to Our Jungle." The products' release will feature men's t-shirts, beach towels, sweatbands and wristbands. They will also release retro-reissues including the 90's Alumni, Count Vinnie, Brooklyn Bart, and more.

DAY 3 - Aug 6th: Will feature a collective of NYC-based emerging designers.

One of my favorite New York restaurants is The Smith (55 Third Ave btw 10th and 11th). I spend so much time there at that I know most of the staff, managers and owners by name and likewise they know me. On a beautiful Summer day The Smith opens it's front facade doors to the street transforming this vintage inspired venue into a sidewalk cafe. Days like this are the best for gathering friends for a drink or bite to eat and of course our numbers always grow as people we know walk by and join. Yesterday I spent the day with international producer, artist and good friend Shaana Diya and of course when we stopped at The Smith for lunch a host of classy characters stopped by to say hello.

Zucco's Le French Diner

Le French Diner is located at 188 Orchard Street btw Stanton and Houston in the Lower East Side. Here is what New York Magazine had to say about this LES establishment.

"Zucco, the owner of the eponymous Zucco: Le French Diner, goes by just one name, and with his cool demeanor and smooth French accent, he pulls it off. His restaurant is stylishly equipped with vintage French bric-a-brac and amenities like fine cloth napkins tucked into silver napkin holders and teensy wineglasses from Paris. Yesterday Zucco of Le French Diner Died. It is hands down Beatrice and my Favorite place to eat and it is not only because of the food but the warm and enchanting presence of it's owner that brought us back. We will miss his smile and wonderful demeanor. RIP Zucco.

Long Live McQueen

Alexander McQueen's Death has left me flooded with emotion and at a loss to comprehend the magnitude of this truly heart wrenching event. To the world McQueen was a true fashion legend and beacon of inspiration for aspiring designers and stylist. His career, nothing less than a Cinderella story of hard work and determination. From living in a small flat in London's East End to landing an apprenticeship with tailors Anderson and Sheppard. From there he traveled and worked with menswear designer Romeo Gigli and then on his return to London applied to Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design to work as a pattern cutter tutor. In a fairytailesc turn of events McQueen convinced the the head of the school to let him enroll as a student due to the strength of his portfolio. His final collection at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design was purchased in it's entirety by Isabella Blow who is cited for discovering McQueen.

Through the years Alexander McQueen was known for his stunning fashion week presentations that took elements of the theater and fashion world and stir them up something truly breathtaking. He influenced the style and public images of countless celebrities, hipster, and fashionistas including myself. He won the prestigious British Designer of the Year award four times but more importantly he won the heart of millions of people around the world. Through his collection he taught us to dream big and loud; to let inspiration pour from every inch of our souls. For this and many other reasons Alexander McQueen will be sorely missed.

This Dandy Life week is going to be truly exciting!! I recently started managing a group of DJ's under the name SO NEW YORK ENTERTAINMENT. These talented turntablist come from all over the 5 boroughs and are a true A-Team is creating a unique and mailable soundscape for events. I am proud to introduce DJ JEFF HAZE, DJ LOUIS XIV, DJ AK, DJ KALKUTTA, DJ DRE and DJ FLY TY. So New York Ent. will be at the VANE POP UP STORE @125 Rivington in LES all week(January 25th -January 31st) spinning the hottest tracks for their finale week. So New York Ent. continues it's activities on January 28th 2010 by hosting ERIN'S GIRLS NIGHT OUT Sponsored by Pearl Vodka and hosted by Singer/Songwriter ERIN ELKINS at BUTTERFIELD 8 @ 5 E 38th St in Midtown. The festivities begin at 9pm with a ladies only HOUR OPEN BAR from there it's Ladies only HALF PRICES DRINKS till close. Two years ago while on my way to some party on the 21st strip I caught sight of 3 people rummaging through the garbage in front of the 5th ave Club Monaco. As I walked by I took a better look at these individuals and realized they were neither homeless nor your average grunge or gutter punks but New Yorker belonging to no obvious group (regular people for lack of a better term). Perplexed I moved on and I didn't really give it any more thought, but today the memory was shot back into my consciousness with the release of the recent New York Magazine post H&M Destroys and Throws Out Perfectly Good Unworn Clothing. Inspired by a New York Times article on this very subject, New York Magazine took the information and sent it viral in one post. This astounding expose on the disposal practices of clothing by conglomerates stopped my day cold. In the article well know writer Amy Odell says:

"both H&M and Wal-Mart throw out unused clothing people don't buy. But they want to make sure that, after they throw stuff out, people can't wear or resell the clothes. So they destroy the items by cutting holes in them with machines."

How is this possible? Since before I could articulate multi-syllable words I remember watching those New York Cares Holiday Coat Drives commercial with the Statue of Liberty huddled on a snow blown street while "The Boss" sang silver bells in the background. The CEOs at H&M and Wal-Mart must have known that there were people who were in no position to buy their products but could still benefit form them. Recently big business CEOs have proved to be incompetent at manging their money. In fact it would seem that Walden University is giving out degrees in Money Mismanagement because Obama had to bail everyone out last year. But however inept America's CEOs and CFOs may be it does not excuse the pure common sense that there is a serious homeless problem in this country. If these companies are donating funds to organizations like http://www.justgive.org/ and http://www.coalitionforthehomeless.org/ great, but there is still no reason to throw away perfectly good clothing.

On December 16th I hosted a fundraiser at the BoConcept Store in Midtown to benefit the efforts of New York Cares and City Harvest called Holiday Blues. From that event we donated two hundred coats and over two hundred pounds of food. It was a really great bit of publicity for all involved and a great event. Now imagine an event like that once every four months sponsored by H&M where donate all the clothes they were going to thrown away to the families in need. How about Wal-Mart giving all the toys they don't sell to the 16,000 homeless kids in New York City? And what a great bit of positive PR. I hope that these two recent articles on the blunders of big business push these cooperation to make better choices and do some good in the communities in which they operated. If these companies are not out to do some good then at least they might take some interest in saving their asses a publicity nightmare.

The Wonderland Epidemic

In March 2010 the most anticipated fantasy film comes to life as moviegoers will walk through the looking glass and fall down a rabbit hole to see Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. Many believe the reinterpretation of the 1865 Charles Lutwidge Dodgson novel "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" was destined for Mr. Burton. A visual mastermind and pioneer of storytelling, the world has allowed Mr. Burton to whisk them away into Halloween haunts, aped planets and sleepy hollows and in 2010 we expect nothing less than a Wonderland. Though we are all eager to see what magic Tim Burton dishes out this March, it is important to note that Alice has been alluring readers and inspiring artists alike for more than 145 years. Within 10 years of its initial United Kingdom release "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" had been released in America and also translated into French, German and Swedish. These adventures have been the inspiration for 25 film and TV adaptations, 6 comic book adaptations, and hundreds of plays, operas, ballets and musicals around the world.

Alice's influence in the fashion world is just as strong. Don't be surprised if you see White Rabbits and Red Queens everywhere between now and March 5th because the fashion community has rallied around the little blond girls in blue and they are going to milk her for all she's worth. In 2003 we witnessed photographer Annie Leibovitz' famed Alice in Wonderland story for Vogue Magazine. This eleven page spread featured designes and cameos by fashion designers Tom Ford as the White Rabbit, Marc Jacobs as the Caterpillar, Karl Lagerfield as Pepper, Jean Paul Gaultier as the Cheshire Cat, Viktor and Rolf as Tweedledee and Tweedledum, Christian Lacroix as the March Hare, Stephen Jones as The Mad Hatter, John Galliano as the Queen of Hearts, Alexis Roche as the King, and finally Donatella Versace and Rupert Everett as the Gryphon and Mock Turtle. The Leibovitz shoot was an idea unprompted by any new Alice media, but since the announcement of the Burton version, Alice is all the rage.

From Bergdorf Goodman's Holiday windows to the anticipated Printemps department store windows that will feature one of a kind dresses by Christopher Kane, Alexander McQueen, Martin Margiela and Ann Demeulemeester. From Versace's Spring 2010 Handbags to Wonderlandesqe hairstyling the Danielle Scutt S/S 2010 collection. What really got me excited was the Spring/Summer 2010 collection from Z Zegna. This collection was pure mad hatter dandyism Straw top hats, tailored tails, slim fit trousers and milk white spats grace the runway, amidst tones of midnight blue, grey, and a sky blue Alice would surely flaunt. The collection was beautifully cut and masterfully styled with accessories including watch chains and fobs, zip up spats, bulky day bags, and lightweight scarves. Within the collection were many of Z Zegna's signature pieces like trenches and strong collar details but overall the collection was terrific. Through the Alice in Wonderland inspiration we declare all the pieces are wearable and will translate well into the market.

So as Winter rears it's ugly head and 2009 gives way to the New Year keep an eye out for traces of Wonderland. I leave with footage of Disney's flash mob staged at Magic in Las Vegas to promote their 35 piece Alice in Wonderland jewelry collaboration with Tom Binns.
